We turn coffee waste into sustainable chemicals

problem and solution

Problem:

Every day, 3.2 billion cups of coffee are consumed worldwide. In Europe alone, 3.3 million tons of coffee waste is generated annually. Coffee is the fifth most carbon-intensive food product in terms of CO2 emissions. Producing 1 kg of coffee generates 17 kg of carbon dioxide.

Every day in Europe, 9,000 tons of spent coffee grounds (SCG) are wasted, with the majority ending up in landfills and producing methane. In the era of the climate crisis, this not only harms the environment but also represents a loss of valuable resources that could be further utilized in accordance with the principles of the circular economy.

Solution:

While we acknowledge that the coffee industry has a significant carbon footprint, we also recognize the untapped potential of Spent Coffee Grounds. Rather than seeing them as mere waste, we view them as a valuable resource that can be transformed into advanced, sustainable chemicals.

Our innovative process allows us to extract five different fractions from Spent Coffee Grounds: coffee oil, antioxidants, lactic acid (PLA), lignin, and protein additives. These fractions can be used in a multitude of industries, including biodiesel additives, cosmetics, and the production of biodegradable cups, straws, pots, tiles, and plates.

By upcycling spent coffee grounds, we're not only reducing waste, but also contributing to a more sustainable future. Join us on our mission to revolutionize the coffee industry and make a positive impact on the planet.
