Gruppo Cimbali - corporate profile

Gruppo Cimbali,
the story of a company that has shaped history

Gruppo Cimbali is an Italian multinational company specialising in the design and manufacture of professional espresso machines. The company has been bringing coffee culture, tradition and passion to the world of baristas and coffee lovers since 1912 through its constant pursuit of innovative solutions, attention to detail and special focus on design.

The Group’s story began in Milan, with a family tradition which, now in its fourth generation, continues to add new chapters.

Today, the Group operates globally through:

  • Two operational branches in Italy (Rome and Milan);
  • 10 foreign branches (USA, UK, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal and China, Singapore, Dubai and Slayer-Seattle);

Production is primarily carried out in Italy, in the three plants in Binasco (Milan), Ghisalba (Bergamo) and Cappella Cantone (Cremona), which together produce an average of over 200 coffee machines per day, each of which perfectly reflects the design and passion of Made in Italy. Since 2017, following the acquisition of American brand Slayer, Gruppo Cimbali also operates a fourth production plant in Seattle, USA

Figures that sum up the company

The company’s distribution network covers over 130 countries with 12 branches and 700 distributors who work to spread Gruppo Cimbali’s passion and experience throughout the world.

Boasting over a century of experience, Gruppo Cimbali remains the most advanced company on the market thanks to its innovative and superior-quality products, as well as excellent support services for the LaCimbali, Faema, Slayer and Casadio brands.

Thanks to intensive research, revolutionary technical developments and sophisticated design elements, always leveraging experience and tradition, the company can offer a wide range of solutions aimed at supporting the growth and quality of the entire industry.

Business diversification and new products at the heart of the 2021 rebranding

In 2021, Gruppo Cimbali initiated a major rebranding process involving all of the company’s brands. A new vision, new goals and new strategies have been aligned with the experience of this historic company, resulting in a refreshed range devoted to the Office, Convenience Store, Coffee Shop and – for the first time – Home segment. Entry into this new market came with a new exclusive Faema branded product, Faemina, which caters to the increasingly popular Home Bar trend.

Today, just as in the past, Gruppo Cimbali remains the ideal partner for those seeking elegance and reliability

MUMAC & MUMAC Academy:
when passion
meets knowledge

Wherever there is coffee, there is love.

A great, long-standing passion for the world of espresso coffee led to the creation of MUMAC, the Coffee Machine Museum, a 1,700 square metre space designed to host professionals and enthusiasts with the aim of promoting the knowledge and pleasure of coffee.

Opened in 2012 at the company’s headquarters in Binasco, MUMAC was founded with the aim of preserving and spreading coffee culture. Over the years, MUMAC has become a strategic communication asset for the Group and its brands, a reference point for a wide-ranging public thanks to its initiatives, openings and events dedicated not only to stakeholders and professionals, but also to families and students, as well as art, design, culture and beauty enthusiasts.

The world’s largest professional coffee machine museum

With its 300 pieces from the Cimbali and Maltoni collections, over 100 of which are on display, MUMAC is the world’s largest contemporary professional coffee machine museum, a place that contains unique examples of technological development and design. The collection tells the story of professional espresso machines from the late 1800s to the present day, highlighting the stylistic evolution and technological innovations associated with one of the world’s most beloved beverages. Since its opening, the museum has been visited by more than 50,000 people

MUMAC not only offers visitors an insight into the technological and design evolution of professional coffee machines, but also into the changing habits and places of consumption through a continuous narration of an entire Made in Italy sector that consists of multiple elements: the museum, with its exhibition of the Cimbali and Maltoni collections, the MUMAC Library, the historical coffee library with 1300 volumes, the historical archives with over 25,000 documents, Hangar 100, an adjoining multifunctional space for temporary exhibitions and the MUMAC Academy, a place for training and spreading coffee culture.

Spreading coffee culture: MUMAC Academy

MUMAC is also a prestigious venue designed to host events, conferences and meetings, not only for the Group, but also as an unconventional and content-rich venue for other companies. This is complemented by the driving force behind the spread of coffee culture with MUMAC Academy, where knowledge, expertise and research come together to create top-level training programs for professionals and enthusiasts. The Academy’s Training Centre and Sensory Room are outstanding spaces for research and sharing, where training programs, along with theoretical and practical courses, open people’s eyes to the many techniques used for preparing and tasting the drink in all its forms.

Technology & Innovation:
always in the spotlight

A drive to innovate has always been one of the key elements of Gruppo Cimbali’s philosophy. More than 60 professionals in the R&D department work every day to design and develop high-performance machines. Moreover, all activities are conducted in-house and reflected in the 62 patents currently held by the company, 19 of which were filed in the last three years. Gruppo Cimbali has worked on several cutting-edge sustainable technologies – presented at Host 2021 – that improve machine performance, while limiting their environmental impact and enhancing professionals’ skills. These include:

  • Naso Elettronico (electronic nose): winner of the 2021 Smau Innovation Award, this software can identify blends using an artificial intelligence algorithm;
  • Touchless interaction with Cup4you – Evo: the application which, through a Wi-Fi connection, offers a new interaction with fully automatic machines;
  • Art.IN.Cofee: a platform designed to reprocess data in order to obtain advanced information on beverage consumption, monitoring of key machine operating parameters and information to optimise energy efficiency;
  • ‘High Quality Milk’, a differentiated milk dispensing circuit, a device that can reduce machines’ energy consumption;

With regard to digitalisation, Gruppo Cimbali has worked with IoT to create the Global Remote Service Program, in collaboration with TeamViewer, a connectivity software that enables remote interaction with machines to optimise the after-sales service and customer experience. The company has also devised the Digital Twin project in collaboration with Altair, which combines physical and data twins to support the convergence of data and simulation in order to optimise product performance and increase efficiency. Additionally, in collaboration with Khoena, the Smart Plug device was developed to reduce coffee machines’ energy consumption. Finally, the instant thermal project, an instant heating system for water in the coffee circuit, combined with a low-volume service boiler that allows energy to be supplied only when needed, reducing waste and thereby promoting environmental sustainability.

Solutions

All of Gruppo Cimbali’s investments are aimed at creating cutting-edge technological solutions that simplify customers’ work through key innovations, including:

  • HDA: a system that allows customized extraction of water pressure profiles for each dispensing button based on the blend used and drink dispensed.
  • GTA: a patented system that uses an exclusive pre-heater for water supplied to the boiler in order to keep the temperature of the extraction water for beverages precise and stable. This system enables the machine to meet the high precision standards required by the World Barista Championship.
  • TURBO STEAM & AUTO STEAM: a device that produces steam mixed with air to automatically heat or froth milk.
  • MILK 4: combined with TURBO STEAM or AUTO STEAM, this patented device makes it possible to set four frothed milk recipes so you can choose between different temperatures and foam quantities.
  • TURBOMILK: a system integrated in the machine that makes it possible to dispense hot milk (heated or frothed) or cold milk frothed in a fast, simple way, permitting a large drinks menu.
  • PGS: the “Perfect Grinding System” constantly monitors grinding parameters and automatically makes any necessary corrections, reducing the operator’s manual corrections to a minimum.
  • BDS: the “Barista Drive System” is an integrated system that facilitates baristas’ operations through a dialogue between the machine and grinder-doser. The barista is guided step by step through the entire beverage preparation process, from coffee grinding to brewing.

Transparency & Sustainability:
Gruppo Cimbali’s commitment

Promoting an all-round culture of sustainability is one of the main goals of the company which, for some years now, has been developing its own policies in this area that are not limited to production processes, but offer an even broader vision of the entire sector. The aim is to address global sustainability issues through the Group’s products that come into contact with millions of consumers around the world every day.

Gruppo Cimbali’s Sustainability Manifesto, the 4 Ps: People, Product, Planet, Partnership

In line with the goals of the UN 2030 Agenda, the Group has drawn up a Sustainability Manifesto that highlights the 4 main focus areas:

  • People: occupational safety for all employees, diversity & inclusion among human resources, health prevention initiatives, promotion of culture and direct involvement in the local community, and support for social solidarity initiatives;
  • Product: use of recyclable and reusable packaging both for the company’s own machines and for all merchandising, careful selection of all suppliers based on criteria that guarantee an environmentally sustainable supply chain, application of energy saving technologies, evaluation of the environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle;
  • Planet:improvement of the energy efficiency of production processes, sustainable management of events involving customers and the public, collaborations with environmental associations to support the sustainable coffee supply chain, support for projects aimed at raising awareness of global environmental issues;
  • Partnership: this is a cross-cutting focus area that also covers other domains and requires Gruppo Cimbali to constantly collaborate with other players in the supply chain to achieve common goals.
